File # 2020-25202

On Monday, July 13th, at around 12:35 pm, the Nanaimo RCMP responded to a call for assistance from the Nanaimo Fire Department at The Bastion.  Nanaimo's historic landmark had sustained damage from a fire.  As it was deemed suspicious in origin, the RCMP were called in to investigate.

The initial investigation has shown that someone had started a small fire in the stairwell at the lower door. This fire caught on the door of the structure, and spread around the frame.  A passerby stopped and used a fire extinguisher to stop the expanding flames.

Two people were seen at the fire at the time of the incident.  Although this structure was unoccupied, the building and the contents have a significant historical value.  We are looking for assistance in locating the persons responsible for this fire stated Sgt. Jon STUART of the Nanaimo RCMP.  Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
