File # 2020-42381
The Nanaimo RCMP is asking for the public's assistance in identifying a man who stole 3 backpacks from a local daycare. The incident occurred at approximately 10:45 am on Tuesday November 24, 2020 from a daycare located on Wildlife Place.
Due to COVID-19 guidelines, the backpacks were hung on the fence outside the home. As soon as the owner saw that that the backpacks were missing, she called the police and reviewed her security system. At 10:45 a man can be seen riding into the driveway on a yellow mountain bike. He then walks over to the backpacks, grabs three of them and rides off. Police attended and patrolled the area but could not locate the suspect.
One hour later, two of the three missing backpacks were found in the marsh adjacent to the Nanaimo Ice Centre. Their contents, consisting of a change of clothes, were found strewn about next to the backpacks. A dark blue backpack was not found and was most likely kept by the suspect as it was somewhat larger.
The little ones were not told about the theft but when the parents were notified they had a range of emotions, from anger, disgust to shock, said Constable Gary O'Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP. The owner of the daycare has since stopped hanging on the fence.
The suspect is believed to be a Caucasian male in his late teens to early 20's. He was also a quite noticeable hoodie with a geometric pattern. If anyone has information on the identity of this person, please call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345 and quote file # 2020-40114.
